   Thursday, May 01, 2008 | 12:00 GMT

Bea, beach bodies and the thorny
problem of the Mummy gene ...

By AMANDA PLATELL;Princess Beatrice emerges beaming from the Caribbean Sea beside her boyfriend, Dave Clark, and the first impression is how in love they seem.

The second thought is how comfortable this comely 19-year-old is in her own skin - so at ease with her curves that she's happy to be photographed in a skimpy blue bikini.

Thirdly, it hits you that a young woman can run, she can hide, but there's no escaping The Curse Of The Mummy Gene.

In mummy's toesteps: Just like Fergie, Bea plays footsie with an American in the sun

From all accounts, this bubbly, loyal, fun-loving Princess is a chip off the old block. And as she was growing up, the sensible Beatrice no doubt admired her mum's tenacity, her Titian tresses and her ability to light up a room.

But like most teenage daughters with big mums, she might, without being disloyal, have preferred not to inherit the well-upholstered limbs and classic English pear shape of her mum.

Bea is far from obese; not even fat. But there's a temptation for teenagers to blame their parents for everything - even bad body genes, as though there's nothing they can do about it.

Well, Chelsea Clinton proves that theory wrong. She inherited the most thunderous thighs in the history of modern American politics - her mother Hillary is often described as having billiard table legs.

As a teenager, Chelsea was heading the same way. But now a young woman of 28, she's beaten the battle of the bulging thighs and looks terrific, trim and confident.

And you can't tell me that however much Katherine Blair admires her high-reaching mother, even in her most devoted daughterly moments did she really want to inherit Cherie's thighs.

But women everywhere will have great sympathy for Princess Beatrice. I know what it's like, as a teenager, one day to have the lean body of a boy, the next to wake up in bed with a pair of bulging saddle bags and think, heck, where did they come from?

I would have loved my father's twinkling blue eyes and long athletic legs, and would have adored my mother's perfect wasp waist and smile that could melt an iceberg faster than global warming.

Were I to ask my parents what was the one aspect of their body that they would like not to pass on to their daughter, Mum would have said her legs and Dad his nose. Bingo, I got the saddlebags and the big hooter.

Puberty can be a cruel thing, but there is a time when a young woman must take responsibility for her own thighs and accept that whatever genes you inherit, you can - and probably should - make changes to your lifestyle and diet in an effort to do something about it.

I suspect that for all her natural beauty, when Beatrice sees these holiday snaps, she may think that moment is fast approaching.

Of course, the Princess has always lived with the double-edged sword of the Windsor genes. Double-edged in the sense that they bring undreamed of privilege and wealth - but also troublesome and rather unfortunate physical characteristics.

It would have been hard to find a more dazzling couple than the handsome, athletic Prince Philip and his exquisite young bride Elizabeth.

Looking back at pictures of them when they were Beatrice's age, they looked like movie stars - beautiful and beautifully formed.

Then along came Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward - the older boys both quite handsome and fit in their younger days, especially in uniform.

But they also had "fast drop genes". Rather suddenly, their looks just dropped away.

Charles was quite dashing until he hit 25 - but then he started developing that pear-shape that's so unattractive in men.

Andrew has it, too. It's hard to imagine now when you see the corpulent, over-stuffed Prince Andrew, but when Beatrice's dad was her age, he was drop-dead gorgeous. Then it all just started, literally, to drop - the chins, the jaw, the belly, the buttocks.

Or drop out. Yes, that Windsor hair. Despite Prince Philip having a full head of hair well into middle age, all of his sons have been follically challenged. Sadly, the bald gene has also passed on to poor William. If his hairline continues to recede at its current rate, he'll be as bald as a bandicoot by time he's 30.

But there's nothing you can do about that. Thighs you can do something about - as Beatrice may need to find out for herself.

For starters, I'd get rid of the 24-hour police protection Andrew insists on for his daughters.

It's sheer pomposity that these low-risk princesses should cost the taxpayer £250,000 a year each to protect them. From what? A dangerously rich diet?

But the constant First Class travel, with chauffeured limousines, means that Beatrice spends too much time on her generous bottom.

If and when she sets about changing her body shape, Bea will discover there is no substitute for sensible eating and tough exercise. Something that Fergie knows better than most.

Beatrice does not have to carry the sins of the mother on her thighs.

She has a wonderful and privileged life ahead of her, but unless she gets her body under control, she'll have a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and pitiful self-esteem. Just ask Fergie.

Which does make you rather wonder where her mother is in all this.

Having written so movingly (and lucratively, thanks to a multi-million pound WeightWatchers contract) about her own eating problems as a young woman - the obesity that drove her to despair and wrecked her marriage, about the pain of being labelled the Duchess of Pork - you'd have thought she'd have taken a more interventionist role in her elder daughter's physical well-being.

But all is not lost. I'm sure Weight-Watchers would snap up a royal mother and daughter deal. At least Beatrice has now got the "before" pictures.
